Lynchburg Lead Initiatives What can you do about Lead Poisoning? 1. Eliminate Lead Dust by: Washing floors, window sills, and window wells regularly with dishwasher soap. 2. If your job involves working with lead, remove clothes that have lead on them and wash skin before coming home. 3. Be sure that furniture (cribs, etc.) are free of peeling paint. 4. Wipe feet off before coming into the house to avoid bringing in lead soil. 5. Always wash your hands before you eat. 6. Make sure that kids eat at least 3 meals a day. Empty stomachs absorb more lead. 7. Feed your child foods high in calcium (milk, cheese), iron (spinach, broccoli) and vitamin C (broccoli, oranges). 8. Avoid feeding your child foods high in fat and oil (French fries, potato chips, cake). 9. Have your child tested at their yearly checkups if you live in or visit a home built before 1978.
Presently, the City of Lynchburg manages this program. Please see their website for further details. http://www.lynchburgva.gov
